Whole Wheat Bread

Makes 3 loaves
1 Tbsp dry yeast
2 cups hot water
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup cold water
7-8 cups whole-wheat flour
1/4 Tbsp. warm water
2 Tbsp shorteing
2 tsp salt
1/2 cup dry milk

Mix yeast and warm water and set aside. Pour hot water over shortening, sugar, and salt. Mix dry milk with 1 cup whole-wheat flour, add hot water mixture and 1 cup cold water, then add yeast mixture. Add 6-7 more cups of whole-wheat flour. Knead until smooth and elastic and let rise until almost double, then time as follows: Let rise 40 minutes, punch down. Let rise 20 minutes, punch down. Let rise 20 minutes, punch down.

Shape into 3 loaves and place in 3 small greased bread pans. Allow to rise until double in bulk. Bake at 375 for 40-45 minutes.

Whole Wheat Muffins

2 cups whole wheat flour
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup milk
1/2 cup melted butter
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp soda
1 egg

Mix dry ingredients together in a medium sized bowl. In large measuring cup combine liquid ingredients. Pour over dry ingredients and stir just until moistened. Spoon into greased muffin tins and bake at 350 for 15 minutes.

Old Fashioned Biscuits

2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp soda
2 Tbsp shortening
3/4 cup sour milk

Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and soda. Blend in shortening. Add sour milk and work lightly. Cut into desired shape. Put on a lightly greased pan and bake until brown in a hot to medium oven.

Sourdough Bread

1 pkg dry yeast
1 cup starter
1 1/2 cup warm water
2 tsp sugar
1/2 cup shortening, melted
1 1/2 tsp salt
5 cups flour
1/2 tsp baking soda

In a large bowl, soften yeast in warm water, blend in starter batter, sugar, shortening and salt. Add 3 1/2 cups of flour. Beat by hand or with mixer 5 minutes. Cover and let rise until double in bulk, about 1 1/2 hours. Mix soda with 1/2 cup remaining flour. Stir into dough. Add enough additional flour to make a stiff dough. Turn on lightly floured board and knead 8 to 10 minutes.

Shape into 2 small loaves (round). Place on a greased cookie sheet. With a sharp knife, make diagonal cuts across top of loaf. Let rise until double in bulk, about 1 1/2 hours. Bake at 400 for 35 to 40 minutes. Can brush with melted butter.

Sourdough Biscuits

1 1/2 cup flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup butter
1 cup starter

Sift dry ingredients together. Cut in butter, add starter and mix. Turn out on a lightly floured board and knead until satiny. Roll 1/2 inch thick; cut with floured 2 1/2 inch cutter. Place on a well greased pan. Brush with melted butter, let rise 1 hour in warm place. Bake at 425 for 20 minutes.

Slow Cooked Corn Chowder

2 1/2 cups milk
1 can cream-style corn
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 3/4 cups frozen corn
1 cup frozen shredded has brown potatoes
1 cup cubed fully cooked hap
1 large onion, chopped
2 Tbsp butter
2 tsp dried parsley flakes
salt and pepper to taste

In a slow cooker, combine all ingredients. Cover and cook on low for 6 hours.

Slow and Easy Chili

1/2 lb ground beef, cooked and drained
1/2 lb pork sausage, cooked and drained
1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
1 can chili beans, undrained
1 can tomato soup
1 large onion, chopped
2 envelopes chili seasoning

Shredded cheese optional

In a slow cooker, combine the first seven ingredients and mix well. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or until thickened and heated through stirring occasionally. Serve hot with cheese.

Flavorful Beef in Gravy

1/3 cup all-purpose flour
3 lbs beef stew meat
3 Tbsp vegetable oil
2 cans cream of mushroom soup
1 can golden mushroom soup
1 can cream of celery soup
1 1/3 cups milk
1 envelope onion soup mix

Hot cooked noodles or mashed potatoes

Place flour in a large resealable plastic bag; add beef and toss to coat. In a skillet, brown beef in oil. Transfer beef to a 5 qt. slow cooker. Stir in the soups, milk and soup mix. Cover and cook on low for 708 hours. Serve with noodles or potatoes.

Chocolate Pudding Cake

1 package chocolate cake mix
1 package instant chocolate pudding mix
2 cups sour cream
4 eggs
1 cup water
3/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup chocolate chips
Optional: ice cream or whipped cream

In a mixing bowl, combine the first six ingredients. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour into a 5 qt. slow cooker that has been coated with nonstick cooking spray. Cover and cook on low for 6-7 hours or until a toothpick comes out clean. Serve warm with ice cream.

Good Night Waffles

1/2 cup lukewarm water
1 Tbsp sugar
2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
2 cups whole milk, warmed
1/2 cup butter, melted and cooled
1 tsp salt
2 cups flour
2 eggs, lightly beaten
2 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp baking soda

The night before combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let stand 10 minutes, until foamy. Stir in the warm milk, melted butter, and salt. Beat in the flour until smooth (this may be done using a hand mixer on low speed).

Wrap bowl tightly with plastic wrap and let stand overnight on the countertop; do not refrigerate.

Pre-heat waffle iron on setting 4.

While the waffle iron is heating, stir the eggs, vanilla, and soda into the batter.

Cook and serve.
